The measure
Luer lock vs luer slip: which syringe tip do you need?
Two syringes can hold the same volume and still behave very differently at the tip. The luer lock vs luer slip question comes down to one thing: how firmly the syringe holds whatever you attach to it.

Simple definition
A luer slip syringe has a smooth tapered tip. A fitting pushed onto it stays there by friction alone. A luer lock syringe has the same taper plus a threaded collar around it, so a fitting screws on and is held mechanically. Both follow the same luer standard, so the same fittings work with both; the lock simply adds the thread.
Difference in fitting mechanism
On a slip tip you push and twist slightly to seat the fitting; to remove it you pull. On a lock tip you twist the fitting into the thread until it is snug; it will not come off until you unscrew it. That makes the lock connection secure under pressure, and it prevents leaks and accidental disconnection at the joint.
Difference in uses
Choose a luer slip syringe for open dispensing, oral feeding, measuring and any job where nothing is attached or the pressure is low. It is quicker to use and the most common type.
Choose a luer lock syringe whenever you attach a blunt dispensing tip, a filter, tubing or an adapter and press with real force: glue, epoxy, thick sealant, flux, inline filters, lab transfers through narrow fittings.
- Slip: oral feeding, measuring, open dispensing
- Lock: dispensing tips, filters, tubing, viscous liquids
Materials and safety tips
Foosi luer lock and luer slip syringes are polypropylene barrels with rubber plunger tips, sterile and sealed one by one. Twist lock fittings until snug, not tight. Push steadily rather than in bursts to keep pressure low at the connection, and cap the tip when you store a filled barrel.
Final thoughts
If you only measure and dispense, a luer slip syringe is all you need. If anything screws or presses onto the tip, spend the small difference on luer lock. The Foosi luer lock line comes in 1, 5 and 20 mL, thirty per pack.
Where the needle and fitting connect
On a luer lock syringe the needle hub is the female luer fitting; it screws onto the threaded tip and forms a secure connection that prevents accidental removal. On a luer slip syringe the needle simply pushes on. With a fine needle or thick fluid, that difference decides whether the fitting stays put.
Both designs are disposable, transparent and made for the same luer system, so common instruments, filters and dispensing tips fit either. The 1 mL luer lock and 5 mL luer lock sizes cover most laboratory dosing; 20 mL luer lock syringes handle volume through tubing. Dead space at the tip is small on both, which keeps performance dependable when you measure small amounts.
