How to fill capsules at home

Filling your own capsules takes a bag of empty shells, your powder and the right tools. With a hand kit you can fill a week's worth in a few minutes.

What you need

Step by step

Pull each capsule apart. Hold the long body upright and scoop powder into it with the micro spoon. Press the powder down with the tamper made for that capsule size, top it up and tamp again until the body is firmly packed. Slide the cap back on until it clicks.

Packing the powder is what lets the same shell take up to 100% more than when loosely filled, so you need fewer capsules for the same amount.

Tips for clean, even capsules

Work over a tray so spilled powder can go back into the jar. Keep the powder dry; damp powder clumps and leaves air pockets. Tamp in two or three short presses rather than one hard push so the shell does not crack.

Cleaning the tools

Rinse the stainless steel tools in warm water, dry them completely and store them in their box. Dry tools keep the next batch of powder from clumping.

Hand kit or capsule filling machine?

A manual capsule filling machine with a 100-hole plate fills a whole tray at once: load the empty capsules, separate each cover, spread the powder across the holes, press, and close. It saves time when you fill hundreds of capsules, but it needs the right machine size for each capsule size, takes storage space and takes longer to clean. Semi-automatic and fully automatic capsule machines are production equipment for supplement brands.

A capsule filler kit is the simpler route for home use: no plate, no hole manual alignment, just a tool for each size and a tray to catch spills. It costs much less, fits in a drawer and lets you make personalized blends of ingredients in small batches.

How many capsules per session?

With a hand kit most people fill 30 to 60 capsules in a sitting. Packing the powder to the bottom of each shell gives the maximum fill and saves capsules. Store filled capsules in a dry, airtight jar away from light, and label it with the ingredients and the date you made them.

If you outgrow the hand kit, the same capsule size knowledge carries over to any capsule filling machine you buy later.

Benefits of a hand kit, in money and quality

This guide comes down to a simple count. A hand kit costs about as much as one bottle of ready-made capsules, requires no plate, no stand and no storage cabinet, and gives you clear control over exactly what goes into each capsule and in what quality. A manual capsule machine starts at several times the money, and semi-automatic or fully automatic models are built for the output of a production line, where each machine runs with an operator and its own packaging step.

Before you purchase, check the capsule size printed on your bag of empty capsules and choose the kit that covers it. With a little experience you will reach the maximum fill every time: pack to the bottom, top up, press the cover on until it clicks.
